Framed Photo of Ohio State coach Francis Schmidt and his wife. Known for his razzle-dazzle, high scoring offense, Schmidt’s teams put up a lot of points and won a lot of games. The intensity was raised dramatically in what is now known as The Game.  In 1934, Schmidt introduced the tradition of the Gold Pants, which are given to players and staff members after a win over Michigan.  He famously uttered the words to his players, “They put their pants on one leg at a time, the same as the rest of us.” His players responded by shutting out the Wolverines, 114-0, in Schmidt’s first four season for the Buckeyes.

Schmidt finished his head coaching career with an impressive record of 156-58-11. He passed away in September of 1944 at the age of 58. He was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
