Ohio State faced four top 10 opponents in 1949, tying both USC and Michigan. The Buckeyes scored late against the Wolverines and missed the extra point in a 7-6 game. A defensive lineman lined up offsides and allowed Tommy James to rekick the extra point and his second attempt was successful. The 7-7 tie gave the Buckeyes a share of the Big Ten Championship and a trip to the 1950 Rose Bowl. That game would serve as Fred "Curley" Morrison's final hurrah after being a backup most of his career. In the game, he rushed for 119 yards to help Ohio State to a 17-14 upset win over second ranked Cal to finish the season ranked sixth in the country. The Buckeyes finished the season 7-1-2 under third year coach Wes Fesler.
