The Columbus Dispatch newspaper from Saturday, December 30, 1978, with the bold headline reading, "WOODY HAYES RESIGNS". With just over two minutes left in the 1978 Gator Bowl, Ohio State had the ball near midfield trailing 17–15. Quarterback Art Schlichter threw a short pass that was intercepted by Clemson nose guard Charlie Bauman, who was finally shoved out of bounds on the Ohio State sideline after a short return. After Bauman got up, Ohio State coach Woody Hayes grabbed his jersey, and struck him in the throat. Senior Byron Cato had to restrain his head coach as benches cleared from both sidelines. It would be the last game Woody Hayes would coach Ohio State as he'd resign next morning after a 28-year run with the Buckeyes.
Hayes won five National Championships at Ohio State and coached over 40 All-Americans. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
This newspaper is the Home Final edition and unfortunately overshadowed another worthy headline, "OSU Cagers Top No. 1 Duke In Overtime." Newspaper is complete and shows some toning and some wear to the top edges of the inside section.
