This rare, 10K football-shaped charm was presented to Athletic Director, Lynn St. John as engraved on the back of the charm, to honor Ohio State's first ever Western Conference Championship in 1916. These charms were later replaced by championship rings so this is a must have for the ring collectors.
Under fourth year head coach John Wilce, the Buckeyes compiled a perfect 7-0 record and outscored opponents 258-29. 128 of those points came in a shutout over Oberlin, setting a single-game scoring record for Ohio State. OSU finished 3-0 against the OAC, and 4-0 in the Western Conference to win the school's first Big Ten Championship.
Lynn St. John was a spectacular halfback on the Ohio State football team in 1900. He later became the basketball coach from 1911-1919 and also the baseball coach from 1913-1928. "Saint" served as Ohio State's second Athletic Director from 1912-1947 and was responsible for the most important hire in school history, luring J.W. Wilce to coach OSU's mediocre football team. He served on the NCAA Rules Committee from 1912 to 1937 along with James Naismith. The iconic St. John Arena was built in 1956 for basketball and named after him. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1962, Ohio State's Varsity O Hall of Fame in 1977, and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
There is a miniscule chip just outside of the right side of the Block O that can be seen with a magnifying glass. On the back of the charm is engraved L.W. St John and underneath his name is Director of Athletics.
