A lone-surviving ticket from Ohio State's first Western Conference Championship season.  This time, a road game, on October 21, 1916, at Illinois Field in muddy conditions.  The Illini were defending Western Conference Champs and had not lost a conference game at home in four seasons.  It would be a defensive struggle between these two Western Conference rivals. Trailing by six points with 1:10 remaining in the game, Chic Harley faked a pass, cut around the left end and shook off three would-be tacklers and darted into the end zone for the equalizer. "The roar from the small contingent of Buckeye rooters was deafening, and Harley's teammates went wild, not believing what they had just witnessed."

Team Manager and Chic's former high school teammate, Joe Mulbarger, had designed a special square-toe shoe that Harley practiced with and was perfect on his kicks.  Dr. Gurney brought out the shoe and handed it to the Buckeye star, who changed from his mud-filled shoe for the special one as the final outcome waited in the balance.  A few moments later, Harley kicked the extra point through the center of the two goalposts to lift Ohio State to victory and send the 175 OSU fans that had traveled into pandemonium.

"The name of Chic Harley is written in gold in the story of this game," the 1917 Makio proclaimed. It was the first of two consecutive one-point victories for the Buckeyes, who would go on to win all seven games that season to capture their first WCC title in school history.  This may be the most important win in Ohio State history as it set off something in Columbus with the rooters that ignited the need for Ohio Stadium and led to Ohio State being the national power of today.

This ticket stub still had a good sized portion remaining and is in excellent condition. A centerpiece for any Ohio State ticket collector or a Chic Harley collector.
