The NFF announced Ohio State as their national champion prior to the bowl games being played, giving the school their sixth recognized title and Woody Hayes his fifth. However, they ran into Stanford and their Heisman Trophy winner, Jim Plunkett. He led his team to a 27-17 upset of the Buckeyes.
