Excitement surrounded the 1941 opener as Ohio State turned the keys to their football program over a high school winning coach. Paul Brown had dominated the previous six years at Massillon, losing just one game and tying another in that time. On September 27, 1941, he made his college football coaching debut by facing Missouri and head coach Don Faurot, who Brown was hired over in Columbus. The 49,671 Ohio State fans saw Jack Graf score a pair of touchdowns as the Buckeyes caged the Tigers, 12-7.

Paul Brown spent just three seasons at Ohio State, but led the Buckeyes to their first National Championship in his second season in 1942. He would go down as one of the biggest innovators that football has ever seen. He was credited with being the first to use game film to scout opponents, used signals to relay play calls into his players, and was the first to use a playbook.

Brown was both the co-founder and first coach of the Cleveland Browns, a team named after him, and later played a role in founding the Cincinnati Bengals. He won titles at every level including NFL Championships in 1950, 1954, and 1955. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967 and into Ohio State's Varsity O Hall of Fame in 1991.  He passed away on August 5, 1991, at the age of 82.
