The defending Western Conference Champions entered the game with Northwestern on October 13, 1917, with a perfect 2-0 record and yet to be scored upon. With The Purple's defense focused on stopping Chic Harley, this game served as the coming out party for the other halfback, Pete Stinchcomb. He would score three touchdowns in a 40-0 win.
Ohio State would go on to win the Western Conference Championship and complete their second consecutive undefeated season. Their lone hiccup was a 0-0 tie against Auburn in a fundraising game for the American soldiers. Ohio State's Chic Harley became Ohio State's first two-time All-American and two years later would be honored for a third time.
