1916 was a stellar season for Ohio State, led by the school's first three-time All-American, Chic Harley (or Chick as they have it in this program). The Buckeyes outscored their opponents 258-29, but saved their toughest opponent for the season finale.
On November 25, 1916, Ohio State welcomed fellow unbeaten Northwetern to Ohio Field in front of a crowd of 11,979 rooters. In what was built up as a heavyweight matchup, Ohio State's All-American Chic Harley would have to outduel Northwestern's Paddy Driscoll if Ohio State was going to capture their first Western Conference Championship.
It was Harley's foot in the first half that allowed the Buckeyes to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.Harley kicked a 34 yard field goal to give OSU a 3-0 halftime lead. With the score tied in the 4th quarter, Harley sent the home crowd into a frenzy with a 63-yard dash around the right end behind excellent blocking from his OSU teammates-- leading to head coach John Wilce referring to this run as "The Perfect Play." Harley would score once more before Frank Sorensen put the finishing touches on a 23-3 win over the Wildcats. It marked the first time all season that Northwestern was held without a touchdown. The Buckeyes finished the season 7-0.
This program is fully intact and in good condition with some fraying to the bottom left edge, some very minor folded edges on the inside, some staining on the lineup page, and on the back cover.
